Anthony Ashbrook, Founder and CEO of Machines With Vision, demonstrates the company's latest embedded vision technologies and products at the May 2017 Embedded Vision Summit. Specifically, Ashbrook demonstrates a sensor that the company is developing for self-driving vehicles. It's like LiDAR but rather than sitting on top of the vehicle and scanning the world, it sits under the vehicle and measures the detailed 3D structure of the road surface. The company can use this like a fingerprint to work out the vehicle's position very precisely and in conditions where LiDAR and other sensors fail. To make the company's idea work, it uses new neuromorphic image sensors (aka event cameras).
