7/28/21 – FRAMOS offers camera data transfer over a single coax cable using the GMSL2 protocol on the Jetson AGX Xavier platform. Camera developers utilizing the FRAMOS Sensor Module Ecosystem can integrate the highly flexible GMSL2 technology with image sensors producing up to 8MP resolution at 30fps over cable length of 15m. Developers benefit from the entire FRAMOS Sensor Module Ecosystem and its large selection of supported sensors as they can quickly create proof-of-concept designs for applications not just for the automotive market. Whenever a sensor module will be installed in tight spaces such as Banking ATMs, Quick Service Restaurant menu boards or POS Self Checkouts, extending the distance between the module from the camera processor is often required. Many other applications, like farming equipment, large drones and logistics robots, can also benefit from this robust automotive grade bidirectional GMSL2 high speed transfer technology.
GMSL2: Many Advantages for Battery-Powered Devices
GMSL marks a new technological step in camera/video transfer technology with many advantages compared to other technologies, like Ethernet, USB or MIPI-CSI2/LVDS. Excellent image quality at high data transfer speed, high bandwidths, and low latency at distances up to 15m can be realized at lower costs with less complexity as fewer components are needed. When camera data or video streams are transmitted over long distances, GMSL2, with its outstanding 6Gbit/s, has a clear advantage over FPD-Link III. Compared to Ethernet, GMSL2 delivers 10x faster data rates, better EMC, 50 % lower cabling costs as well as a lower power consumption – which are major advantages in battery-powered applications.
Production Grade GMSL2 Camera Board from Connect Tech Inc.
FRAMOS has integrated with Connect Tech’s GMSL camera platform using Maxim’s Gigabit Multimedia Serial Link (GMSL) IC. The expansion board allows up to 4 FRAMOS cameras to be connected to the Jetson Xavier module interfacing with the GMSL2 protocol. The cameras are powered by PoC (Power over Coax), so all the data, control signals, and power is sent through a single coaxial cable. This allows for flexible cable routing and ease of installation into small spaces.
Maxim Integrated’s GMSL serializer and deserializers (SerDes) are high-speed communication ICs that fully support the high bandwidth, complex interconnect, and data integrity requirements needed to support automotive infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) based on megapixel camera systems. From the low-power requirements of cameras to the widely varying bandwidth of sensor data aggregation, Maxim Integrated’s GMSL SerDes ICs address the needs of future systems. Using shielded twisted pair (STP) or coax cables of up to 15 meters, the GMSL SerDes ICs meet the most stringent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements.
