New York City – NY, November 9th, 2017: Today the Consumer Electronics Association held their annual CES Unveiled event in New York City, and awarded the Intel® Movidius™ Neural Compute Stick as the Best of Innovation 2018 Honoree for the embedded technologies category.

The CES Innovation Awards is an annual competition honoring outstanding design and engineering in consumer technology products. Honorees in other categories included the LG V30 smartphone, Samsung Galaxy S8 and Logitech G Powerplay wireless charging system. Intel was also named as honoree for the Extreme Edition Intel® Core™ i9-7980XE Processor – a high end CPU solution aimed at gaming and other demanding markets.

The Intel® Movidius™ Neural Compute Stick is a unique device designed to facilitate development, tuning and deployment of deep neural networks at the “edge” of our modern technology networks. These “edge” nodes require computation to be performed on-device where power consumption, latency and privacy are crucial factors in product performance. Featuring an Intel® Movidus™ Myriad™ VPU, the Neural Compute Stick is able to perform the complex, highly parallel mathematical operations required for modern deep neural networks at high speed and ultra-low power. The device is so power efficient in fact, that it only requires a single USB port to operate.

The Neural Compute Stick has seen rapid adoption in the machine learning and maker community, who are experimenting with new artificial intelligence algorithms and applications. Some examples of the device in action include a handheld scanner that can warn of potentially cancerous skin blemishes, and a drone that can autonomously monitor swimming beaches for sharks (as demonstrated by Intel CEO Brian Krzanich this month at Web Summit).

The Neural Compute Stick began as a project inside of Movidius Inc, but took on a radical design overhaul when Movidius was acquired by Intel in late 2016. Thanks to Intel’s extensive design and manufacturing experience, the Neural Compute Stick was re-imagined in a unique anodized blue aluminum chassis, and numerous software upgrades, including the ability to use the Neural Compute Stick in clusters of multiple devices to further improve discrete acceleration of deep neural networks.

The Neural Compute Stick is available today via Mouser and RS Components. Visit developer.movidius.com for more information.
