LETTER FROM THE EDITOR |
Dear Colleague,
Next Wednesday, November 13 at 10 am PT, Renesas Electronics America will deliver the free webinar "Renesas' Dynamically Reconfigurable Processor (DRP) Technology Enables a Hybrid Approach for Embedded Vision Solutions" in partnership with the Embedded Vision Alliance. DRP technology, built into select Arm Cortex-based RZ Family MPUs, accelerates image processing algorithms with runtime-reconfigurable hardware that delivers the acceleration benefits of dedicated circuitry while avoiding the cost and power penalties associated with embedded FPGA-based approaches. In this webinar, Renesas will explain the DRP architecture and its operation, present benchmarks and design examples demonstrating more than 10x the performance of traditional CPU-only solutions, and introduce resources for developing DRP-based embedded vision systems with the RZ/A2M MPU. For more information and to register, please see the event page.
One week later, Lattice Semiconductor will deliver the free webinar "Delivering Milliwatt AI to the Edge with Ultra-Low Power FPGAs," also in partnership with the Alliance. Low power FPGAs are well suited for implementing machine learning inferencing at the edge, given their inherent parallel architecture along with the ability to adapt to evolving deep learning algorithms and architectures. Lattice's iCE40 UltraPlus and ECP5 product families support development of edge AI solutions that consume from 1 mW to 1 W on compact hardware platforms. To accelerate development, Lattice has also brought together the award-winning sensAI stack, which gives designers all of the tools they need to develop low power, high performance edge devices. Two webinar sessions will be offered: the first will take place at 11 am Pacific Time (2 pm Eastern Time) on November 19, timed for attendees in the Americas, while the second, at 6 am Pacific Time (2 pm Central European Time) on November 21, is intended for attendees in Europe. To register, please see the event page for the session you're interested in.

MARKET INSIGHTS |
Visual AI Applications and Technologies: Trends and Opportunities
We’re entering a golden age of computer vision. Rapid advances in enabling technologies, such as algorithms and processors, are making it easier than ever before to incorporate visual intelligence into systems, and to meet the tough cost, size and power consumption constraints typical of high- volume end-products. In this presentation, Jeff Bier, Founder of the Embedded Vision Alliance and Co-founder and President of BDTI, explores the diverse range of vision-based systems that are being deployed at scale across many industries, and highlights some of the biggest opportunities and challenges facing developers of vision- based end-products. He then drills down and examines system developers’ technology choices and challenges, using data from the Embedded Vision Alliance’s unique survey of end-product developers. Based on this data, he explores some of the most promising opportunities for companies supplying building-block technologies that enable system developers to incorporate computer vision into their products. Also see Bier's recent webinar on this topic, now available as an on-demand archive.
Embedded Vision Applications Lead Way for Processors in AI: A Market Analysis of Vision Processors
Artificial intelligence is not a new concept. Machine learning has been used for decades in large server and high performance computing environments. Why is it attracting so much attention, investment and innovation now? The answer, as with most disruptive technologies, is a convergence of technology enablers and market demands that previously were insufficient to drive scale. In this presentation, Tom Hackenberg, Principal Analyst at IHS Markit, examines the market for processors in AI applications. He illuminates key trends in adoption of different classes of processors in a range of key applications, and explains why embedded vision is at the heart of these trends. He also shows how this adoption is driving revenue for different classes of processors in markets including automotive, consumer, data processing, industrial and wired and wireless communications.

Cloud and Edge Vision Processing Options for Deep Learning Inference
Should deep learning-based computer vision processing take place in the cloud, at the edge, or both? This seemingly simple question has a complicated answer: "it depends." This technical article from Alliance Member company Imagination Technologies provides perspectives on the various factors you should consider when making this implementation decision for your project's requirements.

VISION PRODUCT OF THE YEAR SHOWCASE |
Synopsys' EV6x Embedded Vision Processor with Safety Enhancement Package Family (Best Processor)
Synopsys' EV6x Embedded Vision Processor with Safety Enhancement Package (SEP) family is the 2019 Vision Product of the Year Award Winner in the Processors category. Automotive SoC designers must meet stringent requirements for safety and reliability as defined in the ISO 26262 standard to achieve Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) targets. Furthermore, the IP — such as Embedded Vision Processors — that is integrated into the SoC must also meet the same safety and reliability requirements. The DesignWare EV6x Embedded Vision Processor with SEP is the industry’s first ASIL D Ready vision processor IP, capable of achieving the highest level of the ISO 26262 automotive functional safety standard. This new IP is being designed into SoCs used in critical automotive safety applications such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles to perform real-time processing of sensor and camera data.
Please see here for more information on Synopsys and its EV6x Embedded Vision Processor with SEP family. The Vision Product of the Year Awards are open to Member companies of the Embedded Vision Alliance and celebrate the innovation of the industry's leading companies that are developing and enabling the next generation of computer vision products. Winning a Vision Product of the Year award recognizes leadership in computer vision as evaluated by independent industry experts.
